It’s just about time to say goodbye to summer. To the warmer weather, the slower pace, the
spontaneous adventures and extended time with our families. Summers in Northern Michigan
are special, not just for the natural beauty, but the ease at which we can enjoy our time with a
carefree spirit and a more laxed schedule.
It may be bittersweet to say “goodbye” to summer, because as lovely as it is, there can be
comfort in saying “hello” to familiar structured routines can be comforting and offer the feeling
of a fresh start and a new season. This can bring about a feeling of excitement, as we return to
routines that ground us, make us feel more in control and offer a sense of renewal that comes
with this change. It can provide an opportunity to refocus, set new goals and embrace a more
structured rhythm of everyday life.
Here are some tips to help your family settle into the new routine and find more ease with the
transition.
Start Adjusting Sleep Schedules Early – Whether it’s kids heading back to school or adults
returning to work, start by gradually shifting bedtimes and wake-up times to match the school
year schedule or your back to work schedule. This helps everyone’s internal clock adjust more
smoothly and can ease getting back into a healthy evening and morning routine.
Re-establish Daily Routines – Reinforce morning and evening habits for the whole family, such
as getting dressed, eating breakfast, doing homework, hygiene care, preparing for the next day
and schedule some quiet time in the evening to wind down. Structure brings predictability and
peace to busy days. Consistency helps kids (and adults) feel more secure and less overwhelmed.
Create a Family Calendar – Shared calendars can help to keep track of appointments, school
events, extracurriculars schedules, and other family plans. This can reduce stress and help
everyone stay in communication concerning pick-ups, drop-offs, obligations and expectations.
Declutter and Organize – Take time to organize backpacks, homework spaces, and lunch
stations. Having a designated spot for everything can save time and cut down on morning
chaos. Tidy up workspaces, home offices, and common areas. Decluttering creates a calmer
environment for both kids doing homework and adults getting back into work mode—whether
at the office or from home.
Ease Into Commitments – Try not to overbook the first few weeks of school. Give yourself and
your family time to adjust before diving into too many extracurriculars or social events. Don’t
feel pressured to fill the calendar immediately. A slower start helps avoid burnout.
Make Time for Connection – Even during busy weeks, carve out small moments to reconnect as
a family—whether it’s a shared meal, a short walk, or a quick chat before bed. Intentional
moments to connect with your family can make a big difference.
Practice Self-Compassion – Transitions can be tough. Give yourself grace as you shift gears and
remember that it’s okay if everything doesn’t fall into place right away. The transition from
summer’s freedom to structure can be jarring. Be patient with yourself and your family. It’s
normal for things to feel off at first—allow time to find your groove again.
